A modern reinterpretation of British travel posters using AI-assisted design systems.

Real locations are transformed into stylised mid-century artwork through controlled prompting, visual consistency rules, and iterative refinement.

01

The Project

This project explores how AI can be used as a creative tool rather than a shortcut. Each piece begins with a real-world location, selected for its recognisable structure and visual identity. Instead of replicating the photograph, the goal is to reinterpret it — reducing complex scenes into bold shapes, limited colour palettes, and clean geometric forms inspired by mid-century travel posters. The challenge was not generating a single strong image, but maintaining consistency across an entire collection. To achieve this, a structured prompting approach was developed, controlling composition, colour balance, lighting direction, and architectural simplification. This ensures every piece feels part of the same visual system rather than a set of disconnected outputs.

REAL WORLD PHOTOGRAPHS

Each poster begins with a real location. These source images provide structure, scale, and recognisable landmarks that ground the final artwork in reality.

Weymouth Bay, Dorset

Portland Bill Lighthouse, Dorset

Durdle Door, Dorset

Bournemouth Pier, Dorset

REAL WORLD PHOTOGRAPHS

The AI does not copy these images directly. Instead, they act as a reference layer — guiding composition while allowing the style to reshape the scene into something more graphic and intentional.

TOWER BRIDGE, LONDON

Tower Bridge is reduced to its core architectural forms, with emphasis placed on symmetry, vertical structure, and the contrast between stone and steel. The Thames becomes a simplified colour field, allowing the bridge to dominate the composition.

BLACKPOOL, LANCASTERSHIRE

Blackpool’s famous promenade and tower are reinterpreted through a controlled mid-century poster aesthetic, blending simplified geometry, muted colour palettes, and AI-assisted design workflows.

AI GENERATED LOCATIONS

Using controlled prompts and style constraints, each location is reinterpreted into a cohesive visual language.

The process focuses on:

  • Simplifying complex forms into bold geometric shapes
  • Applying a limited, consistent colour palette
  • Controlling light direction and shadow to enhance depth
  • Preserving recognisable features while removing unnecessary detail

The final collection demonstrates how AI-generated artwork can move beyond novelty and into structured visual design.

By combining real-world reference material with controlled prompting and iterative refinement, the project maintains a consistent artistic identity across multiple locations and compositions.

Rather than producing isolated images, the workflow focuses on building a cohesive visual system capable of scaling into larger collections, campaigns, or automated creative pipelines.

PARLIAMENT, LONDON

London’s Parliament buildings are reinterpreted through a controlled mid-century poster aesthetic, blending iconic Gothic architecture with simplified forms, muted colour palettes, and AI-assisted design workflows.

OXFORD UNIVERSITY, OXFORD

Oxford University is reinterpreted through its historic stone architecture, formal courtyards, and distinctive skyline of spires. Ornate academic detail is simplified into clean geometric forms while preserving the atmosphere of heritage, structure, and place.

AI-Assisted Style Generation

These images are not produced through simple one-line prompts.

Each result is generated using a structured prompting workflow designed to control composition, architectural simplification, colour harmony, lighting direction, and stylistic consistency across the entire collection.

The challenge is not generating a single attractive image, but repeatedly guiding the AI toward a recognisable and cohesive visual identity.

This process combines creative direction, iterative refinement, and prompt engineering to produce artwork that feels curated rather than random.
